Birth Doula, CD(DONA)

Breathwork Practitioner

RYT, RPYT

I was already working as a breathwork practitioner and yoga instructor when I got pregnant in 2020. I wanted to find a Prenatal Yoga training so I could also offer Prenatal Yoga Classes. I ended up finding one that also included doula training. I thought it would be beneficial to add to my own pregnancy journey, but also information to add to prenatal classes. I was blown away by all the information and teachings in the doula training that aren't widely known, so I wanted to share as much as I could with those expecting.

This was the birth of the Prenatal Program. It was covid, so the hospital was only allowing 1 support person, which would usually be the main support partner. I created a partner workshop to give them as much information as I could so they could navigate their labor and birth from a more grounded, embodied lens, and know a little bit more of what to expect. Working with couples in the Prenatal Program led me to pursue my Doula Career. I've integrated my Breathwork Practitioner training with my Doula practice, providing a somatic and educational approach.

My approach is unique because I am the only local doula who is also a certified breathwork practitioner. I have attended over 35 births, ranging from home and hospital births, water births and dry births, medicated and unmedicated. Each birth experience is unique in preferences and how it unfolds. I'm here to be your grounded support and coach, helping you prepare for and navigate your authentic birth experience.

Hi, I’m Melanie!

My Philosophy & Approach

A Transformative Journey

Becoming a mother is a profound, transformative journey with significant physical, psychological, social, and spiritual changes during the shift from one's old identity to a new maternal self.

Lasting impact

With the right support during this time, it sets up the mother and the child to have the best outcomes, not only throughout the perinatal period but throughout life; mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Birth is a transformative time in a person’s life, especially for the birthing person. The birthing person goes through their own rebirth throughout the perinatal period, especially during the birth experience and I believe we can bring back the support, embodiment, and sacredness in the journey.

Whether it be for labour and birth preparation, full Doula support through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, birth attendance only, breath coaching, or prenatal yoga classes, I’m there to provide you with a mindful presence to help you stay grounded and informed, and to assist in removing some of the unnecessary stress that can surround birth and becoming a parent.

I’m here to support your choices with compassion and without judgment.

We hired Mel as the doula for our first birth experience. We are so glad we did! She provided physical and emotional support throughout our prenatal and postnatal experience. The Partner Labour Support workshop gave my partner (non-gestational parent) awareness of what the birth experience might be like, and confidence in employing various pain relieving and supportive strategies. During Mel's prenatal visits, she helped us attain the correct form and posture for various positions and stretches that helped flip our breech baby! She also helped us process the medical advice we received, enabling us to define and build confidence in our birth preferences. During labour itself Mel was a calming but empowering presence, providing breath and labour position support. She also took photos during the labour which we will cherish for our lifetime. We couldn't recommend her more!

My husband and I never would have been able to get through our son's birth without Melanie. She was a huge support to the both of us, and an incredibly genuine and empathetic person. Mel was extremely supportive through the entire pre-birth process, along with the classes that New Earth Wellness offers. She was in the delivery room to support myself and my husband, along with helping my husband be the best support to me as he could, within an hour of letting her know we needed her. The breathwork class she taught was extremely valuable and helpful during my entire 20+ hour labour, and she helped advocate for our specific birthing preferences when it came to pain management and the option of Caesarean. 100% would recommend Mel as a birth doula to absolutely any woman going forward. We are so incredibly thankful that we hired her!

My husband and I met with Mel for a prenatal visit at the suggestion of our midwife, as I was feeling anxious and apprehensive about childbirth. Mel was a calming, supportive presence who equipped us with strategies to use. She helped calm my nerves, feel more confident for the delivery and made a big difference for our experience. We would highly recommend her. Thank you again Mel!
